President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of condolence and encouragement to the family, relatives and friends of one of Kenya’s foremost women rights defender and activist the late Kamla Sikand who passed away today.

In his condolence message, the President described the late Sikand as a bold, brave and astute leader. He said the late Sikand was a warrior for women rights and a strong believer in human dignity and integrity.

“It was for this reason that as a country we honoured her with a commendation as a trailblazer for women,” the President noted.

President Kenyatta said the late Sikand was deeply involved in the making of Kenya’s 2010 constitution having been a constitutional delegate at Bomas.

President Kenyatta said as a civil rights defender and an anti-corruption crusader the late Sikand played a crucial role as a member of the National Anti-Corruption Steering Committee traveling across the country enlightening wananchi on the evils of corruption.

“As a nation we have lost a great leader, a champion for women rights and a crusader of a corruption free society. She was among the few celebrated women leaders who laid the foundation for women empowerment and equality in our society,” the President said.

As a member of the National Council of Women of Kenya, the Kenya Professional and Business Women Club and Women’s Political Alliance, the President said Kamla distinguished herself as a tireless nationalist who was a role model to many young women.

The President prayed to God to give the family, relatives and friends of the late Kamla Sikand strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
